Karl FagerströmKarl Fagerström earned his PhD in 1981 with a dissertation on nicotine-dependence and smoking cessation.

Currently, Dr Fagerström is Deputy Editor of Nicotine and Tobacco Research and works with his own private consultancy (Fagerström Consulting). He is a founding member of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT). He started the European affiliate in 1999, and he was President until 2003, at which time he was appointed President-elect of the mother SRNT.

Dr Fagerström's main research contributions have been in the fields of behavioral medicine, tobacco, and nicotine, and he has over 150 peer-reviewed publications, of which he is the lead author on over 90.

Dr Fagerström’s current research interests are focused on testing new treatments for smoking cessation and reducing harm and exposure to tobacco toxins in individuals who cannot give up smoking. He has given the name to a nicotine-dependence scale (the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence). In 1999, he was awarded the World Health Organization (WHO) Medal for outstanding work in tobacco control, and in 2012, the SRNT Ferno Award for outstanding clinical contributions.
